ALISTAIR HAD NEVER seen the Baron of Smythe look so enraged. The man’s face turned bright red, his eyes bulging at hearing his daughter’s words.

The Baroness of Smythe, on the other hand, looked utterly incredulous. Evie’s mother let out a tut.

“Evie, I know you’re going through some sort of rebellious phase at the moment, but this really isn’t the time for jokes,” the baroness said.

“I’m not joking,” Evelyn returned, in a soft tone that made Alistair’s heart clench in sympathy. This moment couldn’t have been easy for her. “I’m being entirely serious.”

Her mother’s mouth fell open. “You’re...you’re telling the truth? What in the heavens?” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Evelyn, what have you done?”

“You foolish, ungrateful girl. I knew we spoiled you too much. We’ve been too easy on you.” The Baron jumped to his feet with such force that Alistair feared he would do something drastic. Alistair quickly moved towards the older man, blocking him with his body before he did something rash.

“My lord, I urge you to get control of yourself,” Alistair warned in a low tone. Though he didn’t think the baron was capable of violence, he wasn’t going to take any chances. He would protect Evie with his life if he had to.

“Who do you think you are, Godstone?” the baron demanded through gritted teeth. “You’ve no right to speak to me that way.”

“You have no right to speak to your daughter that way, either,” Alistair said firmly. “You are a baron. Act like it.”

That seemed to sober the older man up somewhat, because he swallowed hard and took several steps back.

“Mr. Godstone, did you know about this?” the baroness asked. “Is that why you went to bring Evie back from Switzerland?”

“Mr. Godstone only found out today,” Evie said quickly before he had the chance to answer. “The same as you and Father.”

Alistair tensed. He suddenly understood what she was doing. Evie was trying to protect him. Doing whatever she could to shield him from her parents’ wrath.

That wasn’t what he’d expected at all. Earlier in her bedroom, when Evie had insisted that she was going to tell her parents the truth, he had assumed that she would also be revealing that he was the father.

His chest tightened as he thought back to when they’d both learned the truth. Alistair had expected to learn that she was pregnant, and yet Evie’s announcement had still knocked all the air out of him. They were going to have a child together. A lifelong bond that he couldn’t even begin to fully grasp.

But then his surprise had turned into a strange sort of elation. He was going to be a father. The woman he loved with all his heart and soul was the mother of his child. It changed everything. And nothing. Changed the nature of their relationship forever. But also, the pregnancy didn’t change how deeply he loved her. If anything, it had strengthened his love for her.
